FORECASTING AND RESERVOIR MANAGEMENT FOR FOZ DO AREIA RESERVOIR ON RIO IGUAçU

Brazil

Sponsors: COPEL (Companhia Paranaense De Energia)
StartDate: 06/1995
PI/Co-PIs: Dr. Georgakakos, PI
Collaborators: Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT)

A prototype forecast-control system was designed, implemented and tested for the Foz Do Areia reservoir in Southern Brazil in order to asses the feasibility and expected benefits of improved operational management of the waters of Rio Iguaçu. Daily records of raingauge rainfall, first-order meteorological data, and streamflow data were used to design and test the forecast-control system. The integrated forecast-control system showed consistently good performance throughout the record, which includes extreme El Niño and La Niña years.
