Your Contribution Can Help Save Lives!

  • "There is a water crisis today. But the crisis is not just about having too little water to satisfy our needs. It is also a crisis of managing water so poorly that billions of people - and the environment - suffer badly." - World Water Vision report, World Water Council, 2000

  • "Flash floods lead to significant loss of life and property every year. Between 2003 and 2005, 96% of all flood-related casualties and economic losses were attributed to flash floods. In most countries, there is need for operational capacities for flash flood warnings linked to emergency preparedness and response mechanisms to reduce these impacts for those at risk." - World Meteorological Organization, 2007

Facts

  • Flash floods kill more people, on average, than any other natural disaster.
  • Most countries still lack the capability to do any of the following:
    A) Predict flash flooding
    B) Issue flood warnings
    C) Coordinate disaster response
  • Billions of gallons of water and billions of dollars are wasted each year because of inefficient water management practices.
  • Developing countries suffer the most due to lack of resources.
  • Even developed countries have inadequate reservoir management practices and limited flash flood forecast capability in rural and mountainous areas.

Our Mission

    The Hydrologic Research Center (HRC) develops solutions to urgent societal needs such as improving water resources planning and management in a changing climate, and developing and implementing flash flood forecast and warning systems that empower local forecasters and disaster management agencies to prevent flooding disasters and mitigate disaster impacts.

    Philanthropic support can help HRC focus on disaster prevention and effective use of precious water resources throughout the world, especially in developing countries.

    Local authorities collaborate with HRC to develop needed systems and HRC trains host agencies who eventually take over operations, thus creating a lasting, sustainable community development.

Success Stories

    Many projects developed by HRC form the basis of successful flash flood prediciton and warning systems and operational water resources management systems. These include the Central American Flash Flood Guidance (CAFFG) and Integrated Forecast and Management (INFORM) regional systems. The CAFFG system has been in operation since 2004, serving all seven countries of Central America:

    • "The CAFFG system developed by HRC provides earlier and more precise warnings and is critical for our agency's contribution to saving lives throughout Costa Rica." - Rosario Alfaro, Forecast Meteorologist, Instituto Meteorológico Nacional de Costa Rica, 2006

    Another regional HRC project is the (INFORM) system for improving water resources management in Northern California, a geographic area under significant climate variability and trends.

Contributions will be used to assist us in one or more of the following activities:

  • Flash Flood Guidance System Special Funding Initiative;
  • Water resources management or disaster prevention project development in developing countries world wide;
  • Training and capacity building for scientists, engineers, water managers, and disaster response professionals from developing countries;
  • Hands-on training of postdoctoral and graduate students at HRC.
