GOAL

The goal of this project is to design and implement a regional system for flash flood guidance (FFG) over the countries of Central America with 100-300 km2 spatial resolution and 1-12 hour temporal resolution. Flash flood guidance is the volume of rainfall accumulated over a given small watershed for a given time period that is just enough to cause bankfull flow in the draining stream at the outlet of the watershed. The guidance values will be made available to national meteorological and hydrological agencies and disaster preparedness response agencies in the region in support of their flood warning and response missions.  The regional system will cover the areas of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

Science and Technology Transfer in Hydrometeorology
at the Hydrologic Research Center

The regional operational flash flood guidance activity in Central America is a Hydrologic Research Center science and technology transfer project. HRC Staff in close collaboration with US Federal Government Agencies (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and US Agency for International Development), regional Agencies (CRRH), and within-country Agencies are using basic science results together with engineering methods of application and socioeconomic principles to develop a regional flash-flood warning system for all seven Central American countries.
